Dennys Global Politics: Obama Statements and Releases: Veto Message to the Senate: S. 1, Keystone XL Pipeline Approval Act: From Denny:  President Obama's only veto in five years.  He vetoed it citing America's national security.  Actually, it was a clever political move to box in the Republicans.  It's easy for them to be against any and all things environmental, even financial burdens on the taxpayers - but national security?  Nope.  Not in an election cycle when the Republicans are hoping to take back the White House.  To go against a presidential decision about national security would be political suicide.

Besides, Americans have nothing to gain by giving a foreign country and their Big Oil easy profits but with no liabilities.  If there would an accident or an act of terrorism it's the American people who would be on the hook financially, not to mention a very toxic clean-up as tar sands oil is exceedingly toxic unlike normal crude oil.  Good move, Mr. President!...

A Truth Journal: XL Keystone Pipeline: Why Should America Take All The Risks and No Benefits?: From Denny:  Once again greedy Big Business seeks to hang the American taxpayers with all the liabilities - while they make billions in profits, free to walk away when it goes bad.

The XL Keystone Pipeline is a huge boondoggle that comes out of Canada.  Apparently, the Canadian firm, TransCanada, along with some American energy partners sum up their business mantra in one chant, "Let the Americans pay for it!"

Our State Department has been on a fool's errand writing up a study on the impact on America's environment, concluding it would not be a problem, in order to act like they are satisfying the environment folks.  As usual, everyone rivets their focus upon the distraction, taking their eye off the obvious.

A Truth Journal: Warning: Danger Ahead If Proceed To Susan Rice Sec. of State Nomination: From Denny:  Sadly, Susan Rice is not winning friends on either side of the political aisle the past week.  The GOP has tried to hang the ambassador killing in Libya on her though it isn't sticking because she had nothing to do with it.

Now progressives are unhappy with her.  Why? Because of her strong ties to the $7 billion XL Pipeline project to deliver filthy oil tar sands clear across America to the Texas oil refineries.  That mega-project tunnels under a precious underground aquifer - the only fresh water source for up to half of the entire country.  

Turns out Amb. Rice owns a huge amount of stock in TransCanada Corp. - up to $600,000.  She also has millions of dollars of stock in other energy companies that invest in oil tar sands like Royal Dutch Shell and Suncor.

Then there are the investments in the Canadian banks that provide loans for these energy company projects.  Think someone has a vested interest in making her Sec. of State?

From Denny:  The famous Koch Brothers, who love to meddle in the very same government they claim should not basically exist, are now flexing their financial muscles again. They are demanding legislators lose the proposed energy legislation for natural gas subsidies to help wean America off oil.

Of course, Koch Industries, based out of Kansas, primarily has interests in oil, refining and pipelines as well as chemicals and consumer products like toilet paper (Angel Soft) and paper towels (Brawny). These are the same numb nuts that want to burrow an oil sands pipeline straight up through America to Canada from Houston.

Did I mention they want to dig said crazy pipeline under the only fresh drinking water, an underground glacier, for the entire Midwest population? Oh, and they claim "it's perfectly safe and nothing will go wrong." Uh, huh, and that's what BP told us here in Louisiana about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill clean up.

Funny Friday Lite: Colbert Addresses The Politically Tone Deaf

From Denny:  Well, today the news is far from earth shattering. President Obama announced his reelection campaign to the yawns of the public this week. The GOP presidential hopefuls field is also a yawn to the Republicans. To the tune of 56 percent have absolutely zero interest in the field before them at this time.  Gee, "Do ya think?" they are finally waking up to the true GOP agenda?

Other good news on the horizon? The Tea Party seems to have peaked. A few months ago they were able to gather tens of thousands for their rallies. This week they claimed to have 350 people when the reality was around 70, judging by the camera phone photo sent in to CNN.

From Denny: Thousands of marine animals have died, about 7,000. There are probably three times that but because of BP preventing any news crews out in the disaster area in the early weeks of the oil spill. It could not be properly documented.

Please attach a cover letter warning them that Congress has amended American law to include lying as an offense punishable by the minimum of 50 years hard labor for each lie. There is no consideration for time served and no cap for the judge's sentencing guidelines, just thought you might like to know that Republican styled "tort reform" tidbit. BP Only Responsible to $75 Million 4 Oil Disaster By USA Law

From Denny: Well, thanks to the Bush and Cheney Cheap Team they made sure that oil companies don't have to pay more than a mere $75 million - not billion - liability for lost wages, lost tourist dollars (Louisiana is known as The Sportsman's Paradise, especially for fishing tournaments), economic and environmental ruin of an area they screw up beyond repair.

I guess it's Bad Karma come back to haunt the Gulf Coast that so foolishly voted for the Republicans and swung from blue Democrat states to red Republican states under Bush. Bush made them think he was one of them. One of them what? Bush is a multi-millionaire trust fund baby who bankrupted eight companies with his lousy decisions.

Bush and his Republicans went on to bankrupt America, sending us into trillions of dollars of debt and saddled us with a two-front war. Iraq and Afghanistan bleed the national treasury to the tune of at least $2 billion a week right now - and that's if the Pentagon and the White House are not downplaying the costs. So, how exactly does the White House play to pay for this BP oil spill clean-up and economic recovery?

President Obama came down here to Louisiana to assure everyone that BP will pay for the clean-up and damages. BP has claimed on their website they will do what Obama said. The problem is the law only requires British Petroleum to pay up to the $75 million cap listed in the Oil Pollution Act. Already, BP is whining that Transocean, the company that built the oil platform, should also share in liability costs. So much for courage of responsibility.

At the moment, Senator Robert Menendez has co-sponsored a measure to raise the liability limit to $10 billion. Only $10 billion? Who are they kidding? These oil companies declared that much in each quarterly profit this year alone! This sounds like more Big Business corporate style welfare yet again. It's going to cost a lot more than this amount. At least Senator Menendez wants to make the amount retroactive so it can apply to the beginning of the oil spill that happened on 20 April 2010. So now the BP lawyers are counting which new oil leak they are going to pay for and which they are not?

Prez Obama is apparently pushing to lift the cap on liability entirely. Let's hope so. And while you are at it, Mr. President, might I suggest you begin taking immediate payments to the U. S. Treasury from BP? Don't wait for the final tally of the costs because they will just drag their feet on paying for another decade or more, leaving taxpayers with the bill. Make them begin paying right now while the payments are manageable.

One good piece of news is that the cap is not in effect if BP is found to have acted negligently or violated the law. This Oil Pollution Act was passed in 1990 because of the huge outcry from environmentalists after the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Of course, with all the Senators the oil industry owns and slaps into their back pockets who the hell actually is naive enough to believe BP will ever face a trial?

Already BP has started demonstrating Weasel Posture by stating, "It's got nothing to do with caps. All legitimate claims ... will be honored," he said. So who determines what is and isn't legitimate as a claim? Where have we heard this one before? Insurance companies after Hurricane Katrina - that still continues today once Big Business figured out there was no one to stop them from taking advantage of consumers.

BP claims via its website it is committed to paying "all necessary and appropriate cleanup costs" as well as "legitimate and objectively verifiable claims for other loss and damage caused by the spill." Tricky legal language to be haggled over in court for another decade most likely.

Currently, our federal government has at its disposal an Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund that the oil industry pays into regularly. Right now that fund can only make up to a total of a $1 billion payout per incident to individuals, businesses and governments. Sounds like meager funds for an environmental disaster of this scope in the Gulf of Mexico.

Remember, Mr. President, you have the right to nationalize BP in America, freeze their assets and - or deny or suspend - their ability to sell their product in America indefinitely. If they don't start paying our government in installments this very month, then it's time to start the punitive process. Don't let this drag on like all your other projects that drove down your popularity and faith in the federal government to get things done. Treat this oil spill like it's the last days of the Presidential campaign and make the big push to win.

Right now you have way too many advisors around you from Chicago and the political campaign that all have the same mindset, and, frankly, they are far too comfortable and sitting down on the job. Get serious about broadening your base of different thinkers who are not Yes People but still Democrats. They need to have the will to solve problems at a faster pace that will reach down into the middle class life immediately.

You just can't continue this practice of putting off this reform or that investigation into wrong-doing until after the mid-terms or after the next Presidential election. The people simply cannot wait. The rioting going on in Greece right now could easily spread here to America by the summer as the public continues to fester resentment waiting for the positive change they expect in their daily lives.

People can't wait another 90 days for this, another six months for that, another two years for something else. People are still losing their homes to foreclosure, people are divorcing, still out of work because Big Business still does not want to hire American workers - like Microsoft and their nasty work visas bringing foreign workers in to take our jobs by the 100,000s - and the middle class that comprises 75% of this country is experiencing financial ruin. Do any of you guys in the White House get all that?

Right now millions of gallons - about 3 million at conservative estimates - has spilled into the Gulf since 20 April when the oil rig burst into flames and sunk to the bottom of the ocean floor, killing 11 workers. Millions more gallons will continue gushing out from the earth's crust for the next three months before that relief well - if it works - can cap the disaster. At the rate of 3 million gallons every 10 days to two weeks this oil spill could easily add up to 20 million gallons. With that much oil gushing out it will go up the Atlantic Coast and destroy their seafood industry and tourism as well.

Stay tuned for the next installment because we all know there will be one. Big Business Greed and lack of responsibility knows no bounds or sense of decency... Howl on, America.

From Denny: When I started these blogs they were to help get back my brain functioning after a car accident that took three years to fully heal. It seems the more I pushed a healing brain the more it responded favorably! Who knew? Life sure takes some twists and turns, doesn't it?

What I was most concerned about was what if my brain might shut down again and the knowledge and understanding gained from a lot of life testing would be lost without a voice. So, I started yet another blog, Beautiful Illustrated Quotations, to record some of my spiritual thoughts. I've always enjoyed quotes as a writing prompt, especially spiritual ones. And then, all of a sudden, this year that blog took off with thousands of views per post. Again, who knew? What started as the weakest blog, that I just figured was a very small niche market, ended up getting well read compared to all the others - other than the crazy photo blog that took off as well on the same level. I guess people like to go on visual coffee breaks with me when I go tripping through the Flickr database for interesting photos for a post. :)

So, thank you, everyone, all of you have been just great to support these blogs. I never know what I will write about, report on or share each day in every post yet there is always something interesting to discover in this world - and I do like to share. Sharing is a way to give back in this world, pay it forward, say thank you, make them laugh or help ease someone else's burden when they are stressed. The Smallest Earth Day Poem - Libations Friday 16 Apr 2010

From Denny: Since everyone is doing their part for Earth Day, as a poet, I thought my part would be to celebrate the smallest unsung heroes of the garden. They contribute so much to our lives through beautiful gardens and the food we love to cook. They work tirelessly beneath the ground, out of sight, yet are a wonder in their simplicity as devoted workers of the planet.

The Smallest Earth Day Poem





You know how it is when...
Winter fades away in the soft Spring rain.
They push up from the ground, flourishing.
Like most troubles they start small yet
Left alone, undisturbed, they grow fast and large:

Weeds in your garden.







You know how it is when...
It’s time to pull out the garden shovel
And dig up your weeding troubles,
Shaking the clay dirt off the clinging roots and
Carefully handling our world’s simple gift:

The carpenters of the soil, Earth worms.







I remember watching a movie
Called “Seven Years in Tibet”
And how a construction was halted
When the workmen found earth worms.
They tediously picked through the dirt,
Removing carefully each and every one,
Relocating them to a safer place.
I smiled as I found myself living
That same basic respect for the worms,
Carefully lifting them to safety as
I broke apart the dirt clods by hand.







Worms in Tibet or worms in Louisiana
Labor without tiring for us all over the world.
They peek their heads out of the soil
Wondering who was disturbing their toil.
Once covered by the calming layer of dirt
They return to their important work:

Respecting the land, doing their small part.





In the Universe of countless souls and busy lives
When something so small respects our living
Can we not equally respect their place in the world?
We can do good for the Earth just like the earth worm,
One small act at a time:

Here's a "government takeover" story for the screaming right wing political guys. A Kansas town called Treece is too polluted from mining waste to inhabit so the government bought it. While the town is being cleaned up taxpayers are paying for the last 140 people to be relocated.

These toxic dumps exist all across America. For decades, we built low-income projects on them and then wondered why there were birth defects, high incidence of asthma and other conditions. For too long it was attributed to the cause of poverty.

The Republicans have never contributed any care or interest in cleaning up poisoned land where America's children live and play. After learning of this former mining town, it makes you wonder just how long the list is of other similar situations:

From Denny: I found a lot of exquisitely beautiful photography to go with the information on this article. It's more interesting than you would think to write about something so simple yet so needed, what we all have in common in life: water.

Note: For any of you who are using this Zemanta software for posting, it just underlined my last name of Lyon. So, out of curiosity I clicked on it and sure enough it takes you to the ancient homeland of my family name: Lyon, France. One of these days I will visit!

Of course, the family made a stop off in Scotland along the way of getting chased out of France about 20 years before the French Revolution. Seems there was a bit of a dust-up with the three Lyon brothers aristocrats trying to convince the King he ought to allow the regular folks a voice in their government. Guess the family finally wore thin on the French king and he banished them.

Of course, then they wore thin on the British king too. Two of the brothers went on to America immediately but my stubborn ancestor and his 16-year-old son decided to stay and make a nuisance of themselves. Something about my 16-year-old ancestor killing the Crown's tax collector. Now that's a real ooops! moment... His older brother sneaked him out of Scotland and on a boat to America. Probably with the admonition: "Go bother your uncles in Boston." The fire brand became part of the American Revolution.

Genealogy can be such a great resource for colorful stories. I always get a charge out of other people's stories of their ancestors. People. You gotta love 'em!

(Scratching my head... now what did all this have to do with an article on water...? Absolutely nothing! It IS Cheeky Wednesday coming up tomorrow... That's my story and I'm sticking to it...
