Editorial Cartoons 12 Dec 2009

From Denny: Looks like this week most cartoonists panned Prez Obama's Peace Prize award as deserving. There are an assortment of opinions on that subject represented here; I panned on the nasty ones that were just Republican red meat for the crazied supporters. My favorite one is the telemarketer cartoon where even Obama doesn't believe the caller.

The public continues to grow weary of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, rolling our eyes and wondering if it's worth it any more. This war is shaping up too much like the Cold War where everyone is paranoid and excessively aggressive, basically accomplishing just about nothing of significance, short of too much screaming, yelling and political assassinations of whomever is the terrorist-anarchist-evildoer Flavor of the Month.

It took a bad economy of supporting too many satellite countries' economies that finally took down the old U.S.S.R. Of course, the Republicans have re-written many American history books with the help of disgraced former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, to convince everyone that actually it was President Reagan who ordered the Russians to "tear down this wall" and so they immediately complied. There are actually people gullible enough to believe such simplistic arrogance...

The last two holiday cartoons say it all during the holiday season: how important it is to work toward world Peace, responding smartly to global warming and get some real health care reform no matter how many annoying Republicans we have to step over to get to the goal. :)

Afghan War surge and Iraq War:

Climate Change summit in Copenhagen:

Health care "reform" still struggling for credibility where it sure looks like the lobbyists have the Democrats in their pockets to do their bidding:

Prez Obama's Peace Prize award:

Roundup of Late Night Funnies, Cartoons 9 Nov 2009

From Denny: There were a lot of cartoons fussing at Speaker of the House Pelosi. Well, she got the bill passed in the House on Saturday session anyway - in spite of the screeching hyenas' throw-down. Chef Bobby Flay would be proud of her.

From Conan O'Brien:

"Yesterday was election day and the people of New Jersey elected a new governor. That's right. Yeah, and I don't know how he did it, but congratulations to newly elected New Jersey Governor, Hamid Karzai."

"Yesterday, voters in the state of Maine voted no to gay marriage, but yes to medical marijuana. That's right, people in Maine believe marriage should be a sacred institution between a really stoned man and a really stoned woman."

"There's a new book that's coming out about Sarah Palin. And the book contains a copy of the speech she would have given if John McCain had won and she had became vice president. Yeah. The speech is entitled, 'Uh-oh.'"

From David Letterman:

"You're here on a very special night, ladies and gentlemen. The entire balcony here at the Ed Sullivan Theater tonight is filled with defeated Democrats. Yeah, buddy!"

"Big losses for the Democrats in the elections. Here's how bad it was for the Democrats — earlier today, the Democratic Party was begging Rush Limbaugh for pain killers."

"Bad year for Democrats right now. All the Democrats have left is the presidency, both houses of Congress, and all of Hollywood. That's all they have."

"Next February, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will be in debate, at Radio City Music Hall. I'm looking forward to that line of high-kicking Secret Service agents."

"Clinton and Bush are debating, and, honestly, think about it, what is more exciting than a presidential debate that doesn't count, if you think about it?"

"One year ago today, ladies and gentlemen, Barack Obama was elected president, one year ago today. One year later, we're still in Iraq. We're still in Afghanistan. But, you know, at least we got rid of Paula Abdul."

From Jay Leno:

"Well, the Democratic Party has a new slogan. 'What happened?'"

"Not a good night for President Obama. He lost elections in Virginia, New Jersey and not doing too good in Afghanistan either. In fact, political experts are calling this his worst setback since he tried that bowling thing."

"Well, congratulations to New York city mayor Michael Bloomberg on the purchase of his third term."

"Bloomberg spent $100 million to get re-elected. Do you realize that is the most money ever spent on a New Yorker that's not playing for the Yankees?"

"Bloomberg was limited to just two terms, but he changed the law so he could run again and be in power another four years. And today, Arnold Schwarzenegger said — 'You can do that? How do you do that? Why can't I do that here?'"

"Some pictures of President Obama posted on the internet seem to show the President looking very thin. ... They say he looks too thin, but White House docs say not to worry, Barack Obama's one of those guys who can eat whatever he wants and still not gain weight. Yet another reason for Rush Limbaugh to hate him."

"Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, scolded Pakistan leaders for not going after Al Qaeda and just pretending that they didn't see a problem that everyone else in the world could see. Ouch. How about that, huh? Imagine, Hillary Clinton lecturing you on turning a blind eye to a problem that the rest of the world could see."

"The White House has approved a new plan to pay — they're going to pay members of the Taliban to change sides and support the U.S. And if it works there, they're going to try it with Fox News."

From Jimmy Fallon:

"Over in Washington, President Obama called and congratulated Republican Bob McDonnell today after he won the governorship in Virginia. Obama then moved Virginia to the bottom of the swine flu vaccine waiting list."

OK, one more time since I like Conan O'Brien:

"A year ago today, Barack Obama was elected president. It's been a year, can you believe that? Yeah. A lot's happened. Yeah. In one short year, Obama's slogan has gone from, 'Yes, we can,' to 'Wow, this is freakin' hard.'"

"Reporters are saying President Obama has been skipping meals lately, and now photographs show he has lost a lot of weight. Folks, if this is true, then maybe Obama really has lost touch with the American people."

"Former President Bush is in Japan, and he was met with protesters carrying signs that said, 'Arrest Bush' and 'Bush is a war criminal.' Yeah. When he saw the signs, Bush said, 'Thanks for making me feel at home. Appreciate it.'"

Libations Friday! 31 July 2009

Featured today: Cold coffee recipe, funny birthday quotes, original poem about how to conquer abuse in your life.

From Denny: Yesterday was my birthday so I thought I'd mellow out on the early AM posting today... :) (lame, I know!) Basically, I took yesterday off and am up early putting together today's post which usually takes some time just to load it into the online editor.

Anyway, at our house we celebrate birthdays all week long with more than gifts, flowers or chocolates. We celebrate with birthday jokes, quotes, or stories. We like to annoy the birthday person to the point they will never forget their birthday this year or any year! It also goes a long way to making a person feel loved and special to be reminded more than once we are glad they are sharing the planet with us.

Here are 9 birthday quotes which we find amusing. If you like to make your own greeting cards for birthdays some of these would be a great idea to include for a friend or loved one to make them smile!

Creamy Espresso Coffee Ice Cream Cooler

Serves: 4

Birthdays in late July can be a bit*h! It's hot, steamy and people can get grumpy crowded together. Why not make everyone happy by cooling them down with this ice cream coffee cooler? Watch the birthday gifts roll in! :)

Ingredients:

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup half and half

1 1/2 cups hot water

1 tablespoon instant espresso coffee (or leftover strong coffee)

4 standard scoops coffee ice cream

Directions:

Combine the chocolate chips, cream and half and half in the jar of a blender. Cover and puree until the mixture is smooth, about 2 - 3 minutes.

In a small bowl stir the espresso into the hot water until dissolved. (Or skip this step if you have leftover strong coffee or just want to make fresh expresso.) Add the espresso to the chocolate mixture and mix until well blended, about 2 - 3 minutes.

Put covered blender jar in the refrigerator and chill until cold, about 1 hour.

At serving time blend the mixture for a short while, until frothy. Fill 4 glasses 3/4 full with coffee mixture and top with 1 scoop of coffee ice cream. Serve immediately.

Don't forget to laugh a lot and enjoy yourselves!

From Denny: Speaking of birthdays, I wrote a new birthday poem this week. Do you find around your birthday that there is all this good energy in the air? Mine feels so positive and peaceful. This time of year I always try to write some poetry, sometimes more. Well, this week something unexpected that reminded me of the past popped into my world.

Whenever I get a new follower signed on from Blogger (look in the sidebar) I check to see if they have a blog and I make sure I follow theirs too. You never know when you might learn something new from someone else and I sure don't want to miss anything. That, and I like to support my friends!

A new follower, a talented poetess by the name of Am I Dead, Yet? (her blog is the same) is the new follower. She is also a friend on HubPages. So, I read through several of her posts and landed on one on her birthday. She was wishing herself a happy birthday because she knew the abusers in her life sure wouldn't.

Actually, this act is a great idea to boost your self-esteem when in a negative situation. If you have to reaffirm yourself to your self, then do it. It's the right call to keep your spark alive in this world and to keep from getting completely burned out. Little by little this woman is discovering the smallest things you can do to survive and later thrive out of this bad environment.

I was struck by how much our childhoods had been so similiar: terrible abuse. She is still struggling with reconciling the garbage. Well, I did my time in hell, figured it out, healed myself and pushed forward into the light of a much happier life.

So, I thought I'd write a poem for her - to laud her as a person and a talent. Poets often write each other poems. Artists often paint each other paintings. Writers often riff off each other in answer. Maybe in your writing you could do the same for someone in your life.

This poem is also useful for others who have been abused and are struggling with their identity and to free themselves from a negative environment. People who have not experienced abuse and are struggling to understand what is going on inside the heads and hearts of friends and loved ones who have been abused, this poem is informative. You really can heal yourself; you really can dare to dream for a better life!

You Are Worthy Every Day!

Happy Birthday to a quiet beautiful soul
Who knows how to shout in the darkness
Wade through surging waters and come out dry
Huddles by her heart’s warm fire to revive
Carefully stepping out onto a new path
While nobody’s looking…

Photo by Rampant Gian @ flickr

Happy Birthday to a touchingly beautiful soul
Who knows not to be forced silent any more
Pushing back the mean-spirited into the abyss
She just climbed out of today, never return, ever
Swimming upstream against bullying naysayers
While everybody’s looking…

Happy Birthday to a growing lovely soul
Who knows she is in transition away from abuse
Casting off ugly words, crafting instead beautiful words
Building a creative foundation of new life
Unwinding, putting to the fire the mean parent tape
While the abusers shrink back in new found fear…

Happy Birthday to you as you win each day
Walking farther away each step from where you were
Hugging close the dream unfolding into new reality
Living the Love each new moment you create
The shackles of your mind unlock and fall down
While the world embraces one willing to be loved and love…

Happy Birthday to a sensitive poetess
Who can employ the past to be her servant
Swaying and dancing with exquisite words
Protecting her new path as fearsome weapons
To stun and confuse fools who no longer can stop her rise
Creation unveils “I am,” traveling moment to moment into infinite Beauty...

How Do You Handle Excessive Stress?

Interrupting GoGo's catnap to tell her about t...Interrupting GoGo's catnap to tell her about the health benefits of smiling... Image by elycefeliz via Flickr

From Denny:

In case you missed it, Friday I ran this quote over at the quotes blog, Beautiful Illustrated Quotations, and thought it was also a good fit over here:

Every now and then you get to quote yourself which I find quite amusing! How does that happen? Well, the spiritual development people know exactly what I'm talking about as it often goes like this: You are replying to an email as I was in this instance, or, say, you were having a conversation with someone, and, suddenly, out pops this fantastic one liner. You know it's profound or memorable or just plain good advice.

There is a lot of chaos, job loss, sudden onset of health issues and violence going on right now in our economy. People are struggling with their particular life tests, looking for ways to battle or handle excessive stress.

I grew up in a harsh environment of constant stress and created a lot of coping skills to help me manage the stress instead of the stress controlling me. Here is the most recent advice my spirit jumped up and offered to a recent email friend whose husband is now out of work and lost their house of many years.

There is a lot of hurt going on throughout this country. Like anyone I have my own garbage to deal with from time to time, yet I follow my own advice as in this quote. It has never failed me.

Inevitably, the bad times begin to fade and finally end and then a new cycle of properity begins. Keep your mind and eyes on the positive - even when you know it's down the road. Eventually, you will arrive at that better point in your life.

This Week: Roundup of Sunday Funnies - The Obama Effect

Bozo Sapien Clown Photo by I'm Fantastic @ flickr

From Denny: Here's a roundup of the late-night comics and was before the outcome of the so-called democratic election was "decided" by the dictator, the clerics and supreme leader.

The Colbert Report

Stephen Colbert:
in Iraq: Saddam sure had good taste. There's so much marble and gold paint, I thought I was watching "The Real Housewives of New Jersey."

The Tonight Show

Conan O'Brien:
Iranians will have to decide which candidate is best prepared to lead them into the the 12th century.

The Daily Show

Jon Stewart:
The Cairo effect, did this already pay off?
MSNBC anchorman Chris Matthews [on tape]: Could it be the Obama effect? The Obama effect?

Stewart: The Obama effect. [Shows graphic of Obama's face superimposed on Bourne Identity movie poster.] Isn't that the sequel to the Obama identity?

Late Night

Jimmy Fallon:
President Obama is proposing a new national health care plan that's both inexpensive and acceptable. He's calling it, "Have your surgery in Mexico."

Real Time With Bill Maher

Bill Maher:
They released, this wee, four prisoners formerly held at Guantanamo Bay. ... They're resettling them in Bermuda and giving them $100,000. In a related story, the entire population of Detroit said that they were part of al Qaeda.

The Tonight Show

O'Brien:
The new CEO said, this is a quote, "Going forward we intend to build on Chrysler's culture of innovation." Then he laughed for three straight hours.

Libations Friday! 12 June 2009

Photo by once and future @ flickr

From Denny: With the economy still in the dumps along with our wallets, this video can perk up the coffee lovers. Demoed is the less expensive way to get that coveted coffee experience we no longer can afford on a daily basis like we used to do. There are quite a large variety of coffee makers available for any budget.

Sitting on the table is one of my favorite coffee companies, Gevalia, from Sweden. Every flavor they make is carefully considered, tested and just plain awesome! We are big fans of the French Vanilla flavor when we want a flavor coffee in our house. They carry coffees from various coffee houses in Europe like Café Sperl in Vienna, Austria, a coffee house still remembered with affection. Clearly, this video also demonstrates how there is still a huge market for coffee consumption!

Video: Be Your Own Barrista

“David Gregg from Behindthebuy.com demonstrates to Harry Smith a variety of home baristas so that designer coffee experience doesn't have to burn a hole in your pocket.”

Watch CBS Videos Online

From the Café Moto site comes our coffee drink recipes for this week. Their funny motto over there is “we drink all we can; the rest we sell.” You really need to check out this site!

Most of us love Café Latte. I like the way they describe the process. Find out the practical tips of how good coffee is achieved in the following offerings!

Photo by Joshua Reppeneker @ flickr

ESPRESSO

We'll put this one first as it is the basis of most coffee drinks.

RISTRETTO: "Short pour." Usually 1 ounce for a single and two for a double. The original Italian espresso.

LUNGO: "Long pour." This is the typical American espresso and is 1.25 ounces for a single and 2.5 ounces for a double.

CAFÉ LATTE

Steam 12 to 14oz. milk between 120 F. and 140 F. Prepare a single or double espresso. Pour espresso into cup and then tilt the cup and pour the milk slowly down the side. This lifts some of the espresso to the top of the cup and gives it a swirled, marbleized appearance. Sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon.

ESPRESSO CON PANNA

Espresso topped with whipped cream.

From Denny: I love the name of this one; sure made me laugh! Also, it’s a great lead-in to my silly poem. Maybe I can claim I was drinking a Hammerhead coffee when I wrote it…?

HAMMERHEAD

An American creation meant to get you wired fast and furious, hence the reference to the shark. Good, strong coffee poured over two shots of fresh espresso. Leave room for cream. Usually ordered by very fast talkers with jittery eyes.

Now for the poetry section, or should I say, silly poetry section:

Do you ever just want to jot down something utterly silly, total nonsense, of not much redeeming cultural value yet somehow it just must be significant? I mean, after all, we are all great writers of soon-to-be historical mention, right? OK, probably not, but it’s fun to dream on…

I talked about anagrams this week. As a writer I do like to play with my words like little kids play with their food (future artists at play). Every now and then I like to play with words in a visual sense where the poem only looks good on paper. Reading it out loud is fine but the auditory loses out for the finer shades of meaning only viewed visually. I like to play with words that sound alike but are not the same subject.

Photo by k0a1a.net @ flickr

Ditties are good for the soul; they help loosen up any emotional rigidity or the results of a bad day. In the following little ditty I played with the sound of the words “I, eye and aye (archaic word for yes).” Creating this little poem was a lot like reading those old vaudeville jokes of “who’s on first?” It’s a short-cut reference, using the sport jargon of baseball, and about the confusion that can happen in a conversation when you don’t know who exactly is being referenced when the speaker uses “him” or “her.”

You could read this poem on a couple of levels, like a philosophy student, or even as a conversation with God or just as silly fun. There is nothing more fun than writing on several levels simultaneously, sort of like playing multi-dimensional chess. The more simply you write, often the more meaning can be packed into it. Also, people can enjoy it on any level.

Life is like that: take a chance, make some choices and live out loud. Choose a word you enjoy, inject a little humor and you are off to the poetry races! Have some fun!

Cheeky Quote Day! 10 June 2009

Photo from typography friendfeed group

Elvis Presley in 1956 on Milton Berle show singing Hound Dog.

From Denny: What is an anagram? Bet you haven't thought about this idea in some time. Well, some people play with their food; writers play with their words! Rearrange words to create another word or phrase, often with hilarious results. You can only use the letters available and only once to produce your fun. The object is to produce another word or phrase that comments upon the original word or phrase used. Now that takes skill!

It can be a synonym, antonym, parody, criticism or praise of the subject used. Here are a couple of funny examples: George Bush = He bugs Gore, Madonna Louise Ciccone = Occasional nude income, and the most famous writer for 400 years now, William Shakespeare = I am a weakish speller.

Today it isn’t quite the brain teaser task it once was. Today we have the internet with fun sites like Wordsmith and Anagram Genius to provide us with the resources of anagram generators.

Anagrams have quite a history as they were popular in the Middle Ages in Europe as well as Greece all the way back to 300 BCE.

I threw the phrase “economic depression” into wordsmith’s generator and up popped all kinds of crazy combinations. The one I liked best was “comedic opines snore.”

From the folks over at wordsmith.org are a few examples of funny anagrams from their Anagram Hall of Fame.

Elvis = Lives

Listen = Silent

Internet Anagram Server = Isn't rearrangement rave?

Dormitory = Dirty Room

Dictionary = Indicatory

Schoolmaster = The classroom

Clint Eastwood = Old West Action

Madam Curie = Radium came

A telephone girl = Repeating "Hello"

Western Union = No Wire Unsent

The country side = No City Dust Here

Evangelist = Evil's Agent

Astronomers = Moon starers / No more stars

Postmaster = Stamp Store

A telescope = To see place

The eyes = They see

The cockroach = Cook, catch her

The Morse Code = Here Come Dots

The Meaning of Life = The fine game of nil

Waitress = A stew, Sir?

Conversation = Voices Rant On

Mr. Mojo risin' = Jim Morrison
(from the Doors song, "L.A. Woman")

The Great New York Rapid Transit Tunnel = Giant work in street, partly underneath

Mother-in-law = Woman Hitler

Funeral = Real Fun

Protectionism = Nice to imports

A domesticated animal = Docile, as a man Tamed it

Butterfly = Flutter-by

Heavy Rain? = Hire a Navy!

The Check is in the Mail = Claim "Heck, I sent it (heh)"

The United States Bureau of Fisheries = I Raise the Bass to Feed Us in the Future

Snooze Alarms = Alas! No More Z's

A Decimal Point = I'm a Dot in Place

The Earthquakes = That Queer Shake

Statue of Liberty = Built to Stay Free

And the best for last, a Biblical quote:
'And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.' = The Word engendered Light as a blast. A delight hit.

Now I double dare you to create a poem out of anagrams! Yikes! That might take me a few months to construct... if ever... BTW, that's a portrait of "me" sleeping on the family dog who's a generous soul...;)
