Poems From A Spiritual Heart: When The Angels Cry For Us

The Guardian Angel

Poems From A Spiritual Heart: When The Angels Cry For Us: How do we look to outside observers as we live our lives, especially those of us who do not grow, re-think our approach and change from our experiences?

What About Angels?

From Denny:  Humanity spends a lot of time agonizing over "what other people think" about them. What if we are observed by what we cannot physically see - yet sense on a deeper level?
What if angelic beings are real and just exist in a veiled close dimension of time but are not present in our exact time and space? How do you think they might perceive our daily lives and choices as they are witness to our time here on Earth?

Photography: 16 Beautiful Creative Angel Photos

Angel foot Photo by Denny Lyon @ flickr

From Denny: One of my favorite digital playgrounds is the Flickr database. Since Flickr instituted the Galleries feature where you can go and pull any photo and place up to 18 photos in that gallery, I've been having a lot of fun! There are over 5,000 favorites bookmarked over the years in my Flickr collection and this is a great way to focus it.

As I was pulling this post together I was struck by how many poems I've written in regard to angels: dreams, visions, observations in life, personal experiences you name it - so I included links to those writes.

You are welcome to use my personal angel photos here. Please include a link back to the flickr page with "Denny Lyon" as attribution instead of "image source" - thanks! You can also use these other photos here with the same kind of link and attribution. Creative Commons is a pretty sweet deal when you are an online writer and need some photos for your posts or online article! Thank you to all the other flickr photographers who have been generous enough to place some of their photos in the Creative Commons area.

A Man in Love - Libations Friday! 27 Nov 2009

*** A poem about the struggle for love reunited...

From Denny:
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I cooked and have been laying back yesterday and today and posting in the afternoon my time instead of the early morning. It's been three years since my car accident where I was able to make a proper dinner again and it sure felt good!

The menu at our house for two? Roasted Cajun Turkey (lots of fresh chopped rosemary, spices, browned clarified butter and white wine as a wet rub while it roasted), roasted sweet potatoes with browned clarified butter. Because of the awesome spices and sauvignon blanc wine in the web rub that were now mixed into the roasting pan's drippings - the gravy was out of this world perfection - no need to add extra spice.

We enjoyed sauteed garlicky green beans (bought them fresh on Saturday, blanched them and all I had to do was toss them together in a saute pan with clarified browned butter, a bit of Creole seasoning, and, when cooked enough, then took them off the heat and add granulated garlic powder and tossed again: simple!) :)

Then there was that awesome fresh cranberry chutney with pineapple in it, sure beats that canned weirdness of jellied cranberry juice. To top it off we love a spicy apple pie. Since there were only two of us this year and I didn't want to get stuck with eating up a large pie day after day, I went for individual pies. I took a tip from a professional chef and cooked up ahead of time the fresh Braeburn apples filling - with loads of freshly grated nutmeg, ground cloves and lots of cinnamon with browned clarified butter, white and dark brown sugars.

Also, made the unsalted butter pie dough ahead of time and chilled in the fridge. All I had to do was roll out about a three inch ball of dough just large enough to cover an individual round ramekin dish. Placed the filling in the lightly buttered ramekin and covered with the circle of dough, poked three holes in it and then baked for 25 - 30 minutes and voila! yummy perfect apple pie. You also avoid too much gooey pie crust and instead have perfect crispy crust, thin and delicate.

OK, so for today what did we do for lunch? Wash, rinse, repeat. And wow! it was still as good as yesterday's meal!

So, why the big "what I had for my meal" lead-in? I'm so glad you asked - or were scratching your head in confusion... Since I slowed down to savor the holiday today I had time to reflect upon yesterday. My husband and I always spend time on a holiday to reflect and relate interesting or inspiring stories to each other of what we find in our world. This following poem story relates one such unusual and beautiful story I learned yesterday and is certainly something to ponder.

A Man in Love

After our Thanksgiving Day meal my husband and I lounged on the couch sipping our after-dinner coffee.

Every Thanksgiving we talk, sometimes for hours, about touching stories we heard that year.

This is a true story that took place more than 60 years ago in the World War Two generation.

It’s the universal story of a young soldier at war, yearning to get home to the woman he loves.

Oddly, as the story unfolded, I felt that finger-run up your spine sensation that happens when your spirit is awakened from its slumber.

The spiritual energy journeyed upward, warmed and flung open the doors of my heart, my eyes brimming with tears and a smile.

Then the energy rose up into my head in a burst of spreading light and settling calm.

In seconds I was intensely awake and aware, knowing to focus upon the story for it was important.

The young soldier was a lieutenant who had served in North Africa and Normandy.

It was here in Normandy he found himself alone on a hill, badly wounded by shrapnel.

He was separated from his unit. No one knew his location and no one could retrieve him under withering enemy fire if they did.

Charles knew he had to do something or he would die of his wounds in a matter of minutes.

He thought long and hard about his priorities in Life. Charles had not seen his wife in almost three years.

All he wanted to do was get home to make love to his wife. It was a simple decision that propelled him forward.

While the bullets flew above his head and near him he started crawling down that hill an inch at a time, bleeding profusely.

He kept the image of his wife’s face in his head, determined to make it home to her.

Charles wondered if he was going to survive this crawl downhill. Between the bullets and the blood he knew he needed immediate medical attention. He crawled on.

Finally, he made it to the bottom of the hill safely. He saw another soldier and begged him to help, asking him to call a medic.

The soldier replied, “No problem. I am a medic.” Charles was well relieved and thankful. The first person he meets at the bottom of the hill was a medic.

The medic tended to his wounds, stopped the bleeding and stabilized him for transport.

He asked the name of the Mexican-American medic because he didn’t want to forget the name of the man who saved his life.

The medic stuck out his hand to shake and said, “Oh, I’m Jesus, glad to meet you.”

Charles was startled, wondering if God had really heard his battlefield prayer and then thought maybe it was just coincidence.

Months passed while Charles was in the hospital recovering from his wounds.

The war was ending, he recovered well enough and was sent home.

Finally, he would see his wife’s face in person, no longer dependent upon her letters and a well worn photo he kept in his pocket to remember her beautiful face.

Charles traveled back to Texas where he and his wife were to meet. He promised to meet her at a special hotel.

When he arrived at the hotel lobby, Charles was surprised to see the place flooded with soldiers arriving back from the war just like him.

He tried to book a room but they were full; Charles was shocked he didn’t realize to plan ahead.

He sat down in the lobby trying to figure out what to do. He was shocked this reunion was not the beautiful meeting he had planned in his mind.

The reality of disappointing his wife overwhelmed him. He slumped into the lobby chair, frozen in disbelief.

He could not seem to lift his head, think straight or move his feet to action. Charles just sat there dumbfounded.

After all he went through to stay alive on the battlefield, heal in the hospital and travel here, he had not anticipated this.

As he was reflecting upon his dilemma and how to face his wife, a man approached him.

“I see you look troubled, soldier. Is there anything I can do to help?”

Charles came out of his battlefield reverie of what he had promised himself as he crawled down that hill to see a tall man, well dressed in an expensive business suit.

He wondered why the man was bothering to care about him but was touched at his concern.

Charles suddenly opened up and told the man his problem, something before this war he would have never done to a complete stranger.

The man nodded his head, said nothing, and turned to go over to the hotel desk.

The stranger returned to Charles, and said in a kind voice, “Don’t worry, soldier. It’s all been arranged. You deserve the best.”

Charles was startled, “What do you mean?”

The man smiled, handed him the room key, and walked away.

Charles was so shocked he barely mumbled his thanks as the man disappeared. He never did get his name.

While he was counting his good luck his mood began to lift. His wife walked into the lobby just ten minutes after the stranger left his side.

As he saw his wife approach he forgot all about everything. His dream was reality. He was finally reunited with his love. Suddenly everything felt right in the world again.

When he and his wife arrived at their room, Charles was surprised the man had given them not just a basic room but a spacious well-appointed suite.

Nine months to the day of their hotel reunion their first child was born.

Charles knew the birth of their child was his third blessing.

As Charles tells his story all these years later he is convinced that man was an angel, “And if he wasn’t a real angel, well, he sure was to me and my wife that day!”

Angel Diaries: Samuel - Libations Friday! 30 Oct 2009

*** How do you recognize when an angel has truly come into your life? Do you remember your angel sightings or did the moment pass you by?

From Denny: This is a little story poem to be included in a developing book, written from the perspective of the child.

Angel Diaries: Samuel

This new house was different to her and so were the new people.
Everything was different; everything had suddenly changed.
The little girl was now three years old and studying all around her.

When the family first arrived, mysterious people from their old house visited.
Before talking to the parents, one man bent down to reassure the little girl.
He told her she was safe now as the bad woman who tried to harm her had an accident.
He said he and his friends made sure she was dead and wouldn’t harm anyone ever again.

The little girl was relieved, knowing he spoke the truth to her.
The same man repeated the story to the parents and they too were relieved.
The little girl knew powerful people were watching over her.

After the mysterious men left the little girl felt uneasy, sensing other problems to come.
For the first few months, the little girl watched as her parents invited new people into the new house.
She lingered near doorways straining to hear their conversation without entering the room since she was not allowed to participate.

The number of new friends grew and the parties grew louder so she couldn’t sleep.
The next morning, after those parties, her father was grouchy, grumpy and cross from too much drinking.
She had to step on egg shells around his meanness as he didn’t like children.

In the new house, everything seemed to change; the parents were no longer happy.
The father’s new job was difficult and stressful, making him angry all the time.
The mother was nervous and fearful around the father, especially when he yelled a lot.

Then, one Sunday afternoon, when the father was screaming and the mother, the older brother and the little girl were afraid, a very tall man knocked on the door.
His name was Samuel; he lived just across the street in this sleepy small town.
He was so tall he had to stoop low to fit through the house’s doorway as it was a 100 year old house in New England.

Later, the little girl learned he was almost seven feet tall. Samuel was in his 80’s now and had shrunk to six feet 10 inches. He said he was seven feet tall when he was young.
The family and the little girl had met Samuel when they first moved in and when Grand Dad was visiting for the summer. Grand Dad and Samuel became fast friends as they were close in age.

Grand Dad and Samuel were both mellow sociable men, always in a good mood.
Both Grand Dad and Samuel took a special interest in the little girl and took time to teach.
They told her stories about life, stories from their youth, people they knew and the future. They were amazed she listened to them which only caused them to teach her more.

One day when the father was angry and abusive again, the little girl remembered Samuel’s visits.
She prayed and asked God to send Samuel to stop her father from being so angry.
She knew her father was so tall he didn’t fear anyone but she knew he would fear Samuel who was the only person she knew who was taller.

As soon as the little girl finished her prayer, there was a knock at the front door.
The father went to answer the knock and was shocked to see Samuel standing there.
Samuel said, “I hear someone asked for my assistance.”

The father turned red with embarrassment and stammered his hello, not knowing what to say. He sensed someone told Samuel about his bad temper.
When Samuel came into the living room, the mother breathed a visible sigh of relief.
Samuel came over to sit down on the largest couch, sprawling his long legs out in front of him.

The little girl greeted Samuel as she climbed up onto the brown couch to snuggle up to him. Samuel grinned, winked and whispered low, “I hear you requested me; things will be fine now.”
The little girl was so excited Samuel could hear her in the spiritual silence that she beamed!

The father was annoyed and told the little girl to get off the couch. Samuel insisted she remained to complete her visit.
At that the little girl tried to stand next to the sitting Samuel to prop her arm and lean on Samuel’s shoulder like she did with other loving adults who liked kids. He was so tall and long that his shoulder was way above her head.

So, the little girl decided she would do what she used to do when she was two years old: stand on the lap of the adult to get to their neck to hug them. She couldn’t reach Samuel.
Well, Samuel was not the kind of guy who would scoop up a child to pull them up. He expected her to figure it out and smiled at her to try again another way.
The little girl was drawn into the moment and started to crawl up his chest, digging her knees into his slouched reclined body to gain traction. It seemed to her like a mountain to climb.

The little girl kept sliding down his chest and then had to retrace her knee-steps over and over again. Finally, on the third try she made it all the way up his chest and grabbed so wildly on to his neck she practically seized it. Samuel only laughed as the father looked on in horror.
Samuel winked at the little girl as her legs dangled down his chest without support as she clung to his neck. She pulled herself up to his huge long face that was almost as big as her entire body. Then the little girl claimed her prize and smothered him with cheek kisses and neck hugs as gratitude for showing up for a visit. At that success, he gathered her up with one giant hand and held her up against his neck like a small tiny kitten in need of a cuddle. The two were wrapped in this glowing energy.

The father kept complaining about the little girl being a nuisance but the mother pulled him away. The mother sensed there was something more here than just a child on a visit as she saw the glowing light. The father never did understand because he could not see what the others saw. He could not understand because he could not feel what the others felt.

Samuel visited the little girl for a few years more and then moved away. He came often when the little girl prayed he would visit. The father changed a little each time Samuel appeared, more fearful he would be held accountable of his own misbehavior though Samuel never directly challenged him.

Samuel became known as the little girl’s godfather as Grand Dad used to label him. But Grand Dad knew all along who Samuel really was; so did the little girl and her mother. Before Samuel left, he kneeled down to the little girl and told her not to worry about what life would bring, no matter how bad it seemed.

He said that he was sent from Heaven to help her and the family, now his assignment was done. He instructed her that if she first invited them how other people would come into her life to teach and protect her. And the last thing Samuel promised her was this as he smiled down at her, “One day it will be you doing the teaching and the protecting and you are going to be very good at it.”

Happy Birthday to The Social Poets Blog, Angels Bridge Poem for Libations Friday 23 Oct 2009

*** If you like stories about real life angel experiences, then this is a must read!

From Denny: Tomorrow on the 24th, The Social Poets blog is officially one year old! Nothing like toddler status in the blogosphere. :) This was my first blog before spinning off all the others with various themes. I decided to keep adding more and more humorous quotes when the economy got chaotic, knowing people need to laugh and laugh often. This birthday cake animation was so much fun I just had to use it too - it's a free download.

It's funny when I sat down to write this poem yesterday I had three poems in my head at one time. It seems this one won out for first debut! It's been bouncing around in my head since I read another angel poem from a friend, Mystic Dave (link to his blog is under area of Link Love). People seem to enjoy poems and short stories that involve angels. So, here's one of what I call a story poem to celebrate my first year anniversary of writing The Social Poets and dedicated to my angelic friends who inspire and protect me daily!

Angels Bridge

An old stranger walked up to me in the grocery store and started talking.

Strange people come up and talk to me all the time like they have known me for years.

OK, it happens a lot lately, don’t know why, but Life intersects and I go with the flow.

He seemed to have so much to say and so I gave him a long listen.

Mostly, he asked deep and thoughtful questions in a running monologue.

At first, I have to admit, I thought he might be experiencing dementia.

Who comes up to you and starts off with such observant questions?

He complained aloud, Why is it people support and chase after the powerful?

I wondered silently about the gossip media and others who profit from people watching.

Do they vote for them because they believe they will gain a lavish lifestyle too?

He had my attention and my thoughts turned to the follower mentality in politics.

Do they align themselves with the rich and powerful, hoping that suddenly elevates them?

My mind went to wannabes of all kinds and stripes in society: fawning social climbers.

The animated old man began to answer his own questions as I remained silent.

The powerful will always step on the vulnerable to gain even more power.

He continued, The powerful will always use the weak, promising the share of power, only to deny it in the end when most desired.

By then, I was drawn in and wondering where he was going with all this.

His questions stabbed the air with force. Why chase after a mirage?

Why give your power away in the mistaken belief it will make you more powerful?

Why is it so few respect the Truth? Why is it so many turn away from the Truth?

I had pondered those very same questions myself. Had he read my mind?

The old man peered deeper into my eyes, wanting me to remember his words.

He chuckled as he pulled back a bit from his intensity, knowing I was not sure of him.

Sure, he remarked casually, the Truth stings our silly egos at times but at a small price.

Why not honor and chase after the Truth with the same fervor as chasing after riches?

Then his face grew serious, his voice quiet to deliver his most important teaching.

Truth leads to Wisdom. Wisdom teaches how to wield power and wealth to benefit All.

The path to Life’s balance, he insisted, is this: Honor, Truth and Wisdom.

He stepped away silently while the atmosphere around me was thick with awareness.

I turned around as I awoke to the present but he was no longer there in the food store.

Then I wondered almost aloud if I had just had a waking vision of an angel.

No, loudly whispered on the wind with a chuckle, I was really there!
