Funny Stephen Colbert Mocks The Debt Ceiling Angst

Stephen Colbert on the debt ceiling ridicule

From Denny:  Only Colbert would dare to take on the angst riddled politicians and political strategists when it comes to the debt ceiling in need of raising its proverbial roof. Colbert: "Hey, President Bush did it in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and twice in 2008."

He goes on to reveal the hypocrisy of the Republicans in blocking the debt ceiling bill the Democrats were supporting. Never mind it was the Republicans who introduced this same bill. Yes, the Republicans stood up against themselves and voted down their own legislation. Hunh?

Who needs to go to political blogs for the explanation of the truly weird American politics reality show when you can get it from Colbert or Jon Stewart?

From Rep. Dave Camp, R-Michigan: "This vote, a vote based on legislation I've introduced, will and must fail." Can you believe this guy actually got up in the House of Representatives and put this idiot statement into the House record? Explain this odd reading a few centuries from now. "Like, man, they sure were clueless back in those days, those Non-Founding Fathers."

Colbert found these to be "stirring words" just like the oft quoted Patrick Henry the Republicans love to mention upon every breath, especially in front of a news camera. Of course, Colbert rephrased the famous quote to fit this situation: "Give me liberty - and I don't want liberty!" Yeah, that's tellin' 'em!

Now get this, apparently, the Republicans phoned Wall Street executives right before this debt ceiling vote to inform them the vote was "just for show." (source: New York Times) Of course, Colbert gives his opinion: "Yeah, 'just for show' like the sneeze guard on a restaurant salad bar." He reminds us of just how easy it is to duck under the sneeze guard and sneeze liberally onto the croutons.

The Tea Party base gets reassurances from the GOP they are against raising the debt ceiling while the Wall Street base gets the assurance is just political theater. It's a win-win.

So, now, is everyone looking sideways, mustering the most puzzled look they can?  "You betcha!"  A direct quote from the infamous Sarah Palin - such a witty girl.

Dancing on the Ceiling
Republicans show their Tea Party base that they're against raising the debt ceiling, while reassuring Wall Street that it's political theater. (03:45)
